Hola VPN exposed as botnet

Hola presents itself as a free VPN service, claiming up to 42 million users.

The Hola Unblocker Windows client, Firefox and Chrome extentions as well as the Android app have all been shown to contain multiple vulnerabilities which allow a remote or local hacker to gain code execution and privileges within a user's system.

Hola users may also be traced online by way of a persistent ID. Hola users are exposed to potential Man-in-the-Middle attacks by other Hola users as a result of Hola users' peculiar relationship with the company's other venture, a 'bandwith' service by the name of Luminati.

As of yet no solution to the problems posed by Hola has been discovered but uninstallation of the Hola service will at least abate any further exploitation of this issue. Windows users need to delete %localappdata%\Hola to fully remove the Firefox addon. Deletion of C:\Program Files\Hola may also be necessary.
