Project Vault is a secure computing environment on a micro SD card, designed to be used on any platform. Even though it is found on such a small memory card it has an ARM-based processor, wireless communications (NFC) and an antenna.
It's main function, according to the Google I/O demo, is to encrypt communications and keep data safe from hackers. For the system to work both devices must be using Project Vault. Google also claims that the device can be used to encrypt video and as a viable alternative to passwords.
A software development kit has already been released for Project Vault, with developers invited to get creative and build suitable apps for the device.
Google's initial market is the business community, particularly healthcare providers and companies in the financial services industry, spheres that have been especially targeted by hackers.
