The dangers of 'Free' Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi takes place over radio waves - anyone may be listening in on your communications, leaving users exposed to hackers over insecure connections.

Hackers have been known to create their own free Wi-Fi connections in order to extract data from unsuspecting victims.

Hackers are more likely to target heavily used networks, such as those found in public spaces.

Tips on how to safely use Free Wi-Fi:

  1. Ensure devices have up-to-date anti-virus, firewall and security patches
  2. Use caution about the sites you visit - avoid sites that entail exposing your personal or financial details
  3. Use a VPN (virtual private network) service to encrypt data in wireless hotspots
  4. Enable two-factor authentication for accounts when it is an option - the user receives a SMS code that must be input in addition to the password in order to access those services.
