Cybercriminals phishing for emails via SMS






 
Cyber-crooks are using cellphone numbers to gain access to Gmail accounts. The ploy is surprisingly simple as shown in the below video:






  1. Victims are sent a text message warning them that they are about to receive a code to ensure that their Google account is secure
  2. The user is asked to respond with the code as confirmation
  3. Once the attacker has received the confirmation response they then have the ability to log into the victim's user account without detection
This trick could be used to circumvent multi-factor authentication, in some instances.

Users are warned to be aware of unwarranted messages, either via email or text. It is highly unlikely that users will ever receive legitimate messages from Google asking for a response via text - such messages should be ignored.
