Edit
On the various markets to be found on the dark web Uber accounts can be bought for prices ranging from $0.40 to $2. The brisk trade in log in details continues despite Uber's denials that they have suffered a recent breach on their end. Some have speculated that an employee may have inadvertently leaked customer information. The company itself blames weak user passwords and passwords/username combinations that may have been used on other websites that have in fact been breached. Online media outlets have been able to verify that the account details being sold do in fact work and several legitimate Uber customers have complained on twitter that charges have been incurred on their accounts without their knowledge.
A major problem is that Uber insists on holding payment details of its customers as a matter of signing up to the service, instead of calling for each transaction to be verified individually. This makes it easier for hackers to misuse accounts once they have been compromised.
