Black hat hackers can be found online offering their services for as little as $20 per day to launch DDOS attacks at any target, repeatedly.
This is a frequent ploy used to nullify a competitor by destroying their search engine ranking and thus increasing the prominence of the competitor’s online presence.
A severe hack could wipe out the entire database of an online store or brochure website, many small businesses have not even allowed for backups of their online assets. A destroyed online presence is as bad as no online presence, the overriding result - lost business.
There are some common sense, affordable tactics that small businesses may deploy in order to ward off the most common threats:
- Put firewalls in place on your website and your company systems
- Use IP restrictions and “black IP blockers” to ward off the most common attacks
- Anti-virus and anti-phishing solutions integrated into mail and company servers
