Over the past week Governor of Lagos State Akinwumni Ambode and Zahra Buhari, daughter of the President Muhammadu Buhari have had to release statements warning fellow Nigerians of online impersonators misusing their names. This follows from the news of Tunji Andrews' unfortunate situation.
In the case of Zahra Buhari (@ZmBuhari), some offensive messages were attributed to her on twitter by virtue of an account not in her possession (@Zahra_Buhari) an event which may have caused slight embarrassment to her father but there appears to have been no long lasting damage. She herself holds no office.
Governor Akinwumni Ambode's case is more serious. He alleges that fraudsters have been using his name to cash in on the public's goodwill towards him. Users are warned to disregard any email sent from a_ambode@yahoo.com, the governor has stated that it does not belong to him.
