ISSAN (Information Security Society of Africa-Nigeria) has called for President Buhari to implement the Cybercrime Bill that was signed into law by his predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan.
ISSAN has claimed that the move would save Nigeria billions of Naira that is currently being lost to cyber criminals every year. ISSAN called for the urgent implementation of the bill and praised the previous administration for their decision to sign the bill into law. The society stressed that it would help sanitize the country’s cyberspace.
The ISSAN President and General Manager, Union Bank, Dr. David Isiavwe, said that the law would protect innocent civilians from cybercriminals looking to defraud people of their hard-earned money. ISSAN is hopeful that the bill will be passed as part of the President's pre-election promise to eradicate corruption by upholding and strengthening the rule of law.
He went on to add,
“Also the new law will help individuals to know their rights as well as the appropriate use of their computer systems and the need to protect themselves against the activities of fraudsters in electronic communications.
“The ISSAN will also collaborate with relevant stakeholders to create the needed awareness by all and sundry until Nigeria successfully reduces the activities of cyber criminals to the barest minimum.”
