ECOWAS to issue biometric ID cards

ECOWAS aims to grant citizens of the region biometric ID cards by January 2016. The cards are set to replace residence permits and travel certificates that are currently in use.

The ID card is said to be a step towards the eventual free movement of persons within the ECOWAS region.

The ID card will compliment the biometric passports already in use.
