BifDefender - Anti-virus firm hacked
Hot on the heels of the Kaspersky and Hacking Team incidents comes the breach of Bitdefender. The Romanian firm has admitted to a breach of its cloud service claiming that an outdated service package was the cause. The company has refused to name the package.
A hacker known as DetoxRansome has dumped a plaintext sample of Bitdefender customer data and has threatened to leak more if a ransom of $15,000 is not paid. DetoxRansome claims that over 400 million user risk having their login details released. The list includes both private sector and US government officials. Bitdefender counters that less than one percent of its client base is affected by the breach.
Bitdefender is resisting requests to pay the ransom and is instead working with law enforcement to catch the cybercrook(s).
Affected users are (once again) warned against the use of identical login details across services.
