Nigeria/Microsoft to Establish Cybercrime Forensics Lab

Between 2000 and 2013 Nigerians lost in excess of N159 million to online scammers. Over 2,175 websites were defaced during the same period, 585 of which were government owned.

Microsoft Nigeria, in conjunction with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), has announced their plan to establish a National Cybersecurity Capacity Building Workshop with the theme Balancing Cybersecurity Risks, Innovation and National Security. The workshop is seen as a commitment to education on cybersecurity, a vital collaborative effort between private enterprise and government entities.

National Security Adviser, Major Babagana Monguno, acknowledged that the cyber sphere is changing the Nigerian economic landscape and expressed the need to protect the new digital frontier.

The Major pointed to Nigeria’s National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy documents and Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act 2015 as measures taken to deal with the growing cyber-criminal element. The Federal Government of Nigeria has committed to establishing a National Computer Forensics Lab for cybercrime to compliment the current National Cyber Crime Monitoring Centre.
