Hackers Cripple LA Hospital
Hackers have demanded a ransom of $3.6 million (9000 bitcoins) in order to release the 'electronic keys' needed to unlock the computer systems and thus the hospital data belonging to a healthcare provider based in Hollywood.
The Hollywood Presbytarian Medical Center, an erstwhile reputable medical facility in Los Angeles, California, has been hit by the ransomware attack which has impeded the hospital's ability to offer its full list of services.
At the time of writing the hospital was unable to perform X-Rays or CT scans or access patient data files. Hospital staff have reverted to pen and paper to record the few activities still taking place. Some patients have been transported to other facilities to receive treatment.
Medical records have long been recognized as a treasure trove for hackers but analysts are suggesting that this was not a targeted attack.
The FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department continue to investigate the breach. Details from both agencies, as well as the hospital itself, are currently scarce.
