Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hacked

1 TB of data from Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been leaked on the dark web, courtesy of the Anonymous sub-set OpAfrica.

Anonymous is the notorious 'hacktivist' (hacker-activist) collective with members spanning the globe - OpAfrica is a cell that was created in 2015, supposedly as a means of rooting out issues such as child exploitation and government corruption on the African continent.

OpAfrica runs in parallel with OpNigeria and OpSouthAfrica. All three cells have a similar mode of operation - embarrassing government bodies by way of data leaks. Anonymous has historically made use of its vast numbers to initiate DDoS attacks.

It is not known if the hackers are based in Kenya or elsewhere but it is clear that there is a growing threat to both Kenyan government and private sector data.

In 2015 firms in Kenya lost Sh15 billion ($150,000,000) to cyber criminals, vastly higher than the Sh5 billion ($50,000,000) lost in 2014.
