What are RATs?

A Remote Access Tool is a piece of software used to remotely access or control a computer. RATs are commercially available e.g. OmniRAT - https://omnirat.eu/en/

When used maliciously RAT stands for Remote Access Trojan, these run invisibly on host PCs and permit an intruder remote access and control. Exploited users either download and execute the malicious programs or are tricked into clicking rogue email attachments.

Most RATs come in two components, client and server. Intruders ultimately launch the server program on a victim's machine by binding the installing component to some other legitimate program.

Designed to provide the attacker with complete control of the victim's system, attackers usually hide these Trojan horses in games and other small programs that unsuspecting users then execute on their PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Remote Access Trojans have been used by criminals to take control of webcams and microphones in Smart TVS, laptops, smartphones and tablets. The information gained has been used in extortion plots.
