Online Human Rights

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

On the 27 June 2016 the United Nations General Assembly convened to discuss The promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet

The Human Rights Council decided that:
"The spread of information and communications technology and global interconnectedness has great potential to accelerate human progress, to bridge the digital divide and to develop knowledge societies"
"Recognizing that privacy online is important for the realization of the right to freedom of expression and to hold opinions without interference"
"Considering the key importance of government engagement with all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, private sector, the technical community and academia, in promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms online"
"Quality education plays a decisive role in development, and therefore calls upon all States to promote digital literacy and to facilitate access to information on the Internet, which can be an important tool in facilitating the promotion of the right to education"
Digital literacy is the key phrase, it entails being able to utilize the resources at hand whilst also being aware of the dangers that may arise, especially when dealing with personal data. Treat your personal data as you would your value physical property:
  • Appreciate its value
  • Keep it private - do not feel compelled to share your information with everyone
  • Use more than one mode of security (when the option is there)
