Taiwan arrests three foreigners in $2.5m ATM cyberheist




Taiwanese authorities have been forced to confront the scourge that is cybercrime. Three foreign suspects have been arrested, they are alleged to have used malware to hack into First Bank’s ATMs. The criminals are accused of having stolen $2.5 million from dozens of machines across Taiwan. Knowledge of the heist caused Taiwanese officials to freeze withdrawals at nearly 1000 ATMs nationwide.

Police arrested a Latvian national in the city of Yilan. Two Romanians were arrested in Taipei. Police claim that the remaining 13 suspects have left Taiwan, all are believed to be foreigners with at least two Russians amongst the group. Authorities are in contact with law enforcement overseas.
