MalumPoS, the new malware uncovered by Trend Micro, targets the Oracle MicroOS platform. The virus potentially affects 330,000 units that use the Oracle platform in the hospitality, food/beverage and retail industries.
MalumPoS is part of a wider family of 'PoS RAM scrapers' used by attackers to extract credit card information from the RAM of infected point-of-sale units. MalumPoS is said to look for any data on Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or Diner's Club cards. It was revealed by the researchers that the malware disguises itself as an NVIDIA Display Driver.
The majority of the companies using the Oracle MicrOS system are based in the United States, if effectively deployed this latest PoS malware could put many high profile retailers and brand names at risk.
