Top cyber security experts are reportedly charging their clients $15,000 per day with even moderately competent experts in the field charging $5,000 per day. This according to Manpower, the multinational recruitment agency. Manpower expects pay rates to rise well into the new year.
The boom time for those working in cyber security is being fueled by news of data breaches; consumers being sucked into the world of convenience at their fingertips as provided for by banks, retail outlets, entertainment, telecommunications and transport providers; and the grateful companies looking to capitalize on their increased marketing reach and lower overhead spending as a result of the uptake in smartphone usage.
Unfortunately, where the crowd goes, so go the criminals. Cyber-criminals are looking to cash in within an arena that is loosely monitored and where transnational legislative cohesion is still lacking. Cyber attacks are estimated to cost the global economy $575 billion per annum and have been identified as a genuine threat to international economic prosperity.
In security the ultimate goal is always to make the fortress impenetrable, to keep the fence as high and the gate as well guarded as possible - to protect vulnerable IT infrastructure and confidential data. Now there is an growing appreciation of the inevitable, companies are more accepting of the reality that hacking and cyber breaches are unavoidable. Where previously the emphasis was on prevention, understanding has now grown to the extent that decision makers appreciate the need to respond quickly to a security breach, to identify the threat and reassure customers.
