End of Year Reminders: How to safeguard your privacy online
With the rise in online commerce and the matched increase in cyber criminal activity here are some essential tips to protect yourself online thieves in the new year:
1) Turn off the location services on your phone or mobile device.
2) Remove geo tags from your pictures. There is no need to advertise to the outside world where a particular picture was taken. Embedding latitude and longitude info within image files is a bad idea, doing so makes it easier for an unknown third party to pin point your location and engage in fraudulent activity at your expense.
3) Make use of ALL privacy features when using social media. The same tools that advertising companies use to create a profile of their target audience can also be used by cyber-criminals to manipulate victims.
4) Limit the amount of information that you share on social media platforms.
Omit information when possible. Don't be afraid to use false birth dates etc.
5) Make use of a virtual private network (VPN). Using a VPN is akin to sending your information through a tunnel, it keeps communications secure.
6) Use HTTPS where possible, e.g. https://www.afritechnet.blogspot.com/. HTTP is the language used by websites, the 'S' in HTTPS stands for secure.
7) Use two-factor authentication (2fa) when possible. Google services provide it as an option - a one time code is sent via text to your phone, once the code is entered access is granted.
8) Disable javascript unless absolutely necessary. https://afritechnet.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/how-hackers-target-families.html
9) Do not put unencrypted data in cloud storage.
