HSBC/First Direct to Launch Voice Authentication for Customers
HSBC and First Direct customers now have the option of using voice and fingerprint biometric authentication to access their bank accounts. Nuance Communications Inc. is the company behind the voice biometrics solutions already being used by Royal Bank of Canada, ING Netherlands, Manulife, USAA and Eastern Bank.
Nuance claims to use over 100 different characteristics to determine physical and environmental/behavioral traits that cause variances in accent and cadence. Measurements may be taken from short clips of no more than a few seconds to be compared with a pre-recorded message. Nuance's algorithm measures characteristics and then duplicates.
Voice ID was already available as a feature of phone banking. Touch ID is available for customers on HSBC and First Direct by way of their banking apps on Apple iPhones.
