Opera Server Breach Incident

Opera have been sending emails to their Opera sync users requesting that they reset the passwords that safeguard their cloud stored browser data. Opera sync is advertised as a means of connecting browser data between devices:
When you switch between several computers and smartphones, you don't have to worry about losing track of an interesting web page. Learn how to sync bookmarks, favorite sites on the Speed Dial and tabs to keep important browsing info at your fingertips in Opera!

Of a total 350 million Opera users, only 1.7 million are believed to be Opera sync users. Opera is the fifth most popular desktop browser with 1.9% market share but when it comes to mobile devices Opera holds 10% of a growing market. The company has been praised by technology analysts for introducing built-in ad-blocking and Proxy/VPN service.
This security breach will bring into question the reliability of its inbuilt VPN service.

Opera have stated that they keep user password data encrypted and other data is salted and hashed.

Opera Software ASA sold the browser portion of its Olso based business to Chinese interests in July 2016 for $600 million.

Readers are once again reminded of the need to make use of two factor authentication; strong unique passwords; and password storage facilities such as Keepass.
