Kenya Revenue Authority lost $39m to hacker
An
IT expert has been charged with hacking into Kenya
Authority Revenue and stealing $39 million in the process.
The
28 year old hacker, named Alex
Mutungi Mutuku,
is being held in police custody while officers determine the scope of
a fraudulent scheme believed to have international connections.
Speaking
to Kenya’s Standard
Newspaper
Edwin Okello, the state
prosecutor in charge of the case, alleged that the suspect made use
of remote control hacking techniques to access bank accounts and
extract money.
Kenya
Police Cybercrimes Unit additionally added that Kenya lost $165
million to cyber-fraud in 2016.
Alex
Mutuku has previously been charged with theft, attempted extortion
and blackmail after he and his accomplices hacked the customer
database of NIC
Bank. In the 2015 case the accused was said to have
demanded a 20 bitcoin ($202,000) ransom in exchange for the stolen
data.
