The
hospitality industry has once
again
taken a loss in the battle against cyber-criminals. Twenty hotels,
all part of the HEI Hotels and Resorts, were found to have infected
point-of-sale systems. The breach was discovered after a card
processing company alerted the hospitality group to the existence of
malware on their point-of-sale systems.
The
infected systems were used by HEI at the hotels that they manage on
behalf of Starwood, Marriot, Hyatt and Intercontinental hotels.
Customers who used their debit/credit cards to pay for services at
the various restaurants,
bars, spas, lobby shops within the hotels may have had their banking
details compromised. Hackers may have stolen card owner’s names,
account numbers, expiration dates and verification codes. The hackers
do not appear to have gained PIN codes.
The
investigative bodies have so far failed to ascertain just how many
customers were affected but it is believed that over 8,000
transactions were completed during the period of concern.
HEI
have installed a new point-of-sale system since being informed of the
infection and notifying US federal authorities.
HEI
have advised customers to review their bank and credit card
statements.
