"Twitter credentials are being traded in the tens of millions on the dark
web. LeakedSource has obtained and added a copy of this data to its
ever-growing searchable repository of leaked data. This data set was
provided to us by a user who goes by the alias "Tessa88@exploit.im", and has given us permission to name them in this blog." - leakedsource.com
Leakedsource.com claim to have a data set containing 32,888,300 records - each consisting of username, email and password. They have supported Twitter's official line that the micro-blogging site was not hacked but the attackers took advantage of browser vulnerabilities (in both Chrome and Firefox) to access the user information.
"...tens of millions of people have become infected by malware, and the
malware sent every saved username and password from browsers like Chrome
and Firefox back to the hackers from all websites including Twitter." - leakedsource.com
The browsers are said to have been saved passwords unencrypted and in plaintext, making life easier for the hackers. Twitter are not known to keep user passwords in such a manner. Users of breached accounts have since been notified.
